Billions of Cicadas Set to Emerge This Spring

Get ready for a deafening chorus! This spring, trillions of cicadas will emerge from the ground in the Midwest and Southeast, creating a cacophony that will be heard miles away. These periodical cicadas, known as Brood X and Brood XIX, will be the first time two broods have emerged simultaneously since 1803, when Thomas Jefferson was president.

A Once-in-a-Lifetime Event

This event is a spectacle not to be missed. Billions of these inch-long insects will swarm the air, mating and laying eggs that will hatch in 13 or 17 years, depending on the brood. The last time these two broods emerged together was in 1902, and the next time they will emerge together will be in 2324.
